THE ROLE…
Contribute to the daily news-writing operation:
- Charged with helping keep current our flash-news vertical, The Byte a quick-fire contextualization of the who, what, where, why, and upshot of the day’s most future-forward, market-moving, awe-inspiring stories of the technology and science just over the horizon of civilization as we know it.
Contribute reporting to the weekly publication news cycle:
- Produce reported filings and features on a regular cadence, pitching and reporting stories as they get assigned via the news editor and content director.
- Closely follow multiple areas of coverage as they develop their research and expertise into beats with cultivated sources, drawing up story ideas that result in the filing of accurate, vivid, topical news stories.
- Fill in/help act as an editor on a by-need basis.
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:
- Minimum of 1-2 years of experience contributing (full-time or freelance) for a print or digital publication.
- Demonstrated experience working on tight deadlines with creative views on topical news stories.
- Proficiency in WordPress and/or other publishing platforms/CMS.
- Demonstrable success working as a member of a creative editorial operation, receiving edits, and communicating feedback.
- Exceptional attention to detail: We want reporters who can break down complex stories into individual verifiable facts, and structure them into accurate, clear, error-free copy.
- Candidates for this position can put ideas to paper quickly, succinctly, and with captivating panache.
- The ideal Staff Writer will have demonstrated an understanding of the emergent science and technology beat, as well as the ability to build and maintain a contact list of expert sources.
- Familiarity with data science tools such as scripting, scraping, processing, and visualization is a plus!
JOB REQUIREMENTS: Computer, Internet, and a home office set-up.
PAY: $15.00 per hour
